Our darkened distressed steel with wax is a natural finish that reflects the way that an old toolbox might look: with scratches, pits, nicks and worn edges. Our intention is that it is that these beautiful “imperfections”, streaks, spots and highlights are what make the character of the material interesting. Please note that since it is only waxed, steel can develop surface rust, especially in damp environments, such as coastal locations. Available in light, medium, and dark.

Note: these color samples represent a range of tones.

Iit is important to inspect your shipment immediately upon arrival, as projects left in the crate or garage may prematurely develop rust. We recommend rubbing it occasionally with a light oil or furniture wax (gun oil, Johnson's Paste Wax). It is this aging and rubbing with oil that will make the piece more interesting and beautiful over the years. Discoloration and staining are usually caused by fingerprints and is difficult to avoid… it is the nature of the metal to react to it's environment and to handling (we recommend using clean cotton or leather gloves during installation to minimize fingerprints). If this level of maintenance and aging aren't what you're after we suggest going with stainless steel or powder-coating. Just call us to discuss these options.
