TEXTURE NOTES Our HAMMERED copper texture is comprised of thousands of small hammer hits over a steel plate to create small depressions in the copper. These marks act as tiny bowls, trapping the patina color, providing a rich, varied color/texture combination. This is almost always combined with the beaten texture, which is a byproduct of the process of forming the copper to the shape of the hood. Some shapes require more beating or forming than others, therefore may have more lumps than simpler forms. This is especially true of compound curves. Our BEATEN copper texture is created by using a rubber mallet, leaving large soft lumps and depressions in the copper. As explained in the above paragraph, some shapes require more beating or forming than others, therefore may have more lumps than simpler forms. This is especially true of compound curves. COPPER FINISH & MAINTENANCE
Most of our projects have a medium brown antique patina with some highlights when they leave our shop. The patina, or surface coloration, has a hand-rubbed wax protector coat, which slows the aging process, however, the copper should be allowed to continue to age naturally. This is one of the characteristics of our work and is sought after by collectors of handcrafted copper work. Environmental factors may cause some areas to age more quickly than others. An occasional re-waxing (every 6 months or so) will help the color stay as stable as possible. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasives for cleaning copper. They will take off the original patina. A very small amount of a mild soap, such as dishsoap, with a soft moist cloth may be used to wipe the surface. Copper, by nature, is antibacterial and frequent cleaning for this reason is not necessary. Usually a simple dusting with a soft cloth or duster is all that is really necessary to preserve the natural beauty of an Archive Designs piece. Information about the specific wax or oil used for your project will be made available for maintenance. Although copper is a soft metal it ages with grace and will last for several lifetimes. Our goal is to give it a shove in the right direction. |
